Calne Town Council – ‘Having a drink can cause a Drama’ May 2007

Through partnership working with the local Anti-social Behaviour Panel, Splash felt it appropriate to approach Calne Town Council to possibly engage with them in a potential project that could be delivered to young people to help reduce alcohol misuse and related anti-social behaviour in the town. A presentation to Calne Town Council members’ meeting was arranged and subsequently the Council agreed to commission Splash to deliver a project entitled, ‘Having a drink can cause A Drama’. Splash was instrumental in setting up a further meetings involving all key organisations in the town, to ensure maximum participation & cohesion, these included John Bentley School and Wiltshire Police.

The project, led by Re-Act Drama, targeted 9-13 year olds who live in Calne and aimed to deliver information around the perils & consequences of alcohol misuse, and the impact it can have on their health, life choices, friends, family and the local community. Health professionals and the police paid visits to the project and delivered vital, and sometimes graphic, information to achieve the project aims. During the four-day project the young people work on, and produced, a drama performance – showcased to an invited audience on the last day - around alcohol related issues in a creative, imaginative and impactive way.

Through attending the project the young people are ultimately more aware of the implications of alcohol misuse, realise support is out there if they should ever need it, and being armed with this information, facts and figures has hopefully empowered them to now make the right choices.

During the week all participants grew in confidence & self-esteem, made new friends and learnt vital life skills. They also had a great time in the process as our feedback from them confirms.
